Analogies and Examples in Biblical Teaching and Preaching
Analogies and examples are fundamental to biblical teaching and preaching, serving to clarify complex truths and illustrate moral and spiritual principles. The Bible itself employs various forms of comparison, from direct examples to more elaborate similitudes and parables.
One primary use of examples in the Bible is to present models for behavior. Christ is frequently presented as the ultimate example for believers, demonstrating sincerity (1 Peter 2:22), intercessory prayer (Luke 22:32; 23:34; John 17:9-24), early rising for devotion (Mark 1:35; Luke 21:38; John 8:2), and mission-mindedness (Acts 10:38) [1, 2, 4, 5, 6]. Pastors are also called to be examples to their flocks (Philippians 3:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; 1 Timothy 4:12; 1 Peter 5:3) [1]. The concept of a "parable" in the New Testament, derived from the Greek parabole, signifies "placing beside or together," indicating a comparison, similitude, or illustration of one subject by another [3]. This term had a broad application, encompassing short proverbs (1 Samuel 10:12; 24:13), dark prophetic utterances (Numbers 23:7, 18; 24:3; Ezekiel 20:49), and enigmatic maxims (Psalms 78:2; Proverbs 1:6) [3]. Jesus frequently used similitudes to preach the word, adapting his teaching to what his audience could understand (Mark 4:33) [7]. The Old Testament also records God speaking through prophets using similitudes (Hosea 12:10) [8]. John Gill notes that this practice continued through the apostles and teachers of the Gospel dispensation, by whom "the doctrines of grace have been more clearly dispensed" [10].
Analogies can also illustrate spiritual transformation. For instance, the prophecy in Isaiah 11:7, where "the cow and the bear shall feed" together, is interpreted by John Gill as a metaphor for individuals of previously differing dispositions—one gentle, the other "cruel and voracious"—coming together in a unified church state, sharing the "wholesome food of the Gospel" [11]. This signifies a change in nature and the absence of animosity.
Preaching itself is described using analogies. Paul's preaching, for example, is characterized by "weakness" and "trembling," not out of personal fear, but from an "anxious conscientiousness" to perform his duty, contrasting with mere "eye service" (1 Corinthians 2:3) [12]. The act of preaching is also likened to a herald proclaiming a message [9]. These examples and analogies are not merely rhetorical devices but are integral to conveying biblical truth and guiding believers in their conduct and understanding.
