Applying Descriptive and Prescriptive Biblical Examples Faithfully
The faithful application of biblical examples involves discerning between descriptive and prescriptive texts, understanding that some passages describe events or actions without necessarily commanding their imitation, while others explicitly call for certain behaviors or attitudes. The Bible itself is described as given by inspiration of God and useful for teaching [2].
Many biblical examples are presented as models for Christian conduct. For instance, Christ is presented as an example of self-denial (Matthew 4:8-10; Philippians 2:6-8), diligence (Mark 1:35; Luke 2:49), and glorifying God (John 17:4) [1, 3, 4]. Believers are called to follow Christ's example in various aspects of life, including loving and obeying Him (John 13:15; 1 Peter 2:21-24) [8]. Other figures also serve as examples; Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David are noted for their early rising, which is linked to devotion and the discharge of duties [5].
However, not all biblical narratives are prescriptive. Some passages describe historical events or the actions of individuals without intending them to be universal commands. For example, the detailed accounts of Israel's history in the Old Testament, while divinely inspired, are not always direct instructions for contemporary believers but rather provide context for God's redemptive plan [13, 14, 16, 19]. John Calvin, in his commentary on Isaiah, frequently references historical events and prophecies, indicating their significance within their original context [12, 17, 18, 20, 21].
The distinction between descriptive and prescriptive is crucial for faithful interpretation. When the Bible commands actions, such as glorifying God (1 Chronicles 16:28) or obeying parents (Ephesians 6:1), these are prescriptive [4, 10]. When it describes the "work of faith" as a "working reality" and "continuous chain of work" (1 Thessalonians 1:3), it illustrates the expected outcome of faith rather than merely describing a past event [15]. Similarly, passages that detail God's attributes, such as His wisdom and power in creation (Ephesians 1:11, 1:17; Revelation 4:11), are descriptive of His nature and serve to inform worship and understanding rather than to prescribe human actions [6, 7, 9, 11].
