Ensuring Faithful Analogies and Examples in Biblical Teaching

Biblical teaching frequently employs analogies and examples to convey complex truths, a method evident throughout Scripture. The Old Testament preacher, for instance, was wise and "made right many similes" (Ecclesiastes 12:9 YLT) ^[7]. The New Testament also uses the Greek word parabole to describe comparisons, similitudes, and illustrations, sometimes referring to proverbs, prophetic utterances, or enigmatic maxims ^[6]. This approach helps make abstract concepts more accessible and memorable.

One prominent category of biblical examples is the life and character of Christ. Jesus is presented as the ultimate example in various aspects of faithful living:

Diligence Christ demonstrated diligence, as seen in passages like Mark 1:35 and Luke 2:49 ^[1]. This diligence is required of believers in seeking God (1 Chronicles 22:19), obeying Him (Deuteronomy 6:17), and striving for perfection (Philippians 3:13-14) ^[1].

Similarly, the concept of "peace" is presented as the "work" or effect of righteousness (Proverbs 14:34; James 3:18), leading to both internal and external tranquility ^[16].

The use of examples extends to the calling of believers. All followers are encouraged to be like missionaries, following Christ's example (Acts 10:38) ^[4]. This calling applies to men, women, and children, and is an imperative duty motivated by love (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) ^[4]. Theological commentators like John Calvin frequently refer to biblical narratives and figures as examples.
