The Apostle Paul's writings, particularly in Romans and Ephesians, emphasize salvation by faith apart from works of the law [7]. For instance, Ephesians 2:8 states, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast" [7]. This perspective is echoed in the Augsburg Confession, a Lutheran document, which underscores that salvation is a gift received through faith, not earned by good works [7].
In contrast, the Epistle of James presents a seemingly different view, stating, "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?" (James 2:14) [1]. This passage suggests that faith without works is dead and unable to save. The tension between Paul's emphasis on faith alone and James' insistence on the necessity of works has been a focal point of the debate.
Various Christian traditions have interpreted these biblical perspectives differently. The Reformed tradition, following Calvin, understands faith as necessarily producing good works, not as a means to earn salvation but as a fruit of salvation. Calvin's commentary on Genesis highlights the importance of faith being accompanied by obedience [2]. Similarly, Charles Hodge, representing the Reformed (Old Princeton) tradition, argues that while good works are not the ground of justification, they are a necessary consequence of true faith [4].
The Eastern Orthodox tradition, as represented by John Chrysostom, also emphasizes the importance of works following faith. Chrysostom's homilies on various biblical books stress the transformative power of faith, which results in a life of virtue and good works [3, 5].
Lutheran and Anglican traditions also grapple with the faith-works relationship. The Augsburg Confession affirms that good works are a response to salvation, not a means to achieve it [7]. The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, an Anglican document, similarly affirm that good works follow true faith and are pleasing to God, though they do not merit salvation [8].
The Patristic tradition, including Augustine, navigates the distinction between the "law of works" and the "law of faith." Augustine argues that the law of works, which demands perfect obedience, is contrasted with the law of faith, under which believers are justified by faith and empowered to do good works [6].
