God's Sovereign Hand in Creation and Providence
God's sovereign hand is evident in both creation and providence, demonstrating His absolute right to govern all things according to His will [7]. The concept of creation refers to God calling all things into being out of nothing, an act that was entirely free and for infinitely wise reasons [2]. The cause of all things exists solely in God's will [2].
The biblical narrative of creation begins with "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1) [10]. This statement introduces the Pentateuch and teaches that the world was formed, ordered, and populated by the one true God, not by the deities of surrounding nations [10]. The act of creation is attributed to the Godhead generally (Genesis 1:1, 26), to the Father (1 Corinthians 8:6), to the Son (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16, 17), and to the Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:2; Job 26:13; Psalm 104:30) [2]. Nothing in the creation account of Genesis 1 is created apart from God’s powerful word; His command enacted His will to create the world [11]. God is not part of creation but is its supreme ruler [11]. After creating, God declared His work "good" seven times in Genesis 1, culminating in the declaration that it was "very good" after the creation of human beings [12]. The creation of humanity in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27) highlights His plan for humankind to have dominion over the earth and participate in His Sabbath rest [10, 13].
The "hand of the LORD" is a biblical expression signifying God's power and active involvement in the world [5, 9]. Jeremiah 32:17 proclaims, "Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You" [3]. Job 12:10 asks, "In whose hand is the life of all living things and the breath of every human being?" [6]. This imagery underscores God's control and authority over all existence.
Providence, literally meaning foresight, denotes God's preservation and governance of all things through secondary causes [1]. God's providence extends to the natural world (Psalm 104:14; 135:5-7; Acts 14:17), the animal kingdom (Psalm 104:21-29; Matthew 6:26; 10:29), and the affairs of humanity, including nations (1 Chronicles 16:31; Psalm 47:7; Proverbs 21:1; Daniel 2:21; 4:25) and individuals (1 Samuel 2:6; Psalm 18:30; Luke 1:53; James 4:13-15) [1]. Even the free actions of people fall under His providential care [1].
God's sovereignty means He does "whatsoever he pleased" in creation, providence, and grace [15, 16]. This includes preserving His creatures (Nehemiah 9:6; Psalm 36:6; Matthew 10:29), providing for them (Psalm 104:27-28; 136:25; Matthew 6:26), and specifically preserving, prospering, protecting, delivering, and leading His saints [8]. The psalmist declares that God is sovereign over the entire created order, doing whatever pleases Him in heaven and on earth [14, 15]. His power is described as great, strong, glorious, mighty, everlasting, sovereign, effectual, irresistible, and incomparable [9]. The power of the earth is in the hand of God, and He raises up rulers in His time [4].
