God's Sovereignty in Scripture and Guided Living
God's sovereignty refers to his absolute right to do all things according to his own good pleasure [1]. This attribute is foundational to understanding God's character and his relationship with creation. Scripture consistently portrays God as reigning over the nations and sitting on his holy throne [6]. His power is described as great, strong, glorious, mighty, everlasting, sovereign, effectual, irresistible, and incomparable [4].
The Bible illustrates God's sovereignty in various ways. His power is evident in creation, upholding all things, and in salvation [3]. For example, the Lord's sovereignty extends over all of nature, including making the earth fertile or barren [8, 15]. Daniel 4:25 and 4:35 affirm that God rules the kingdom of mankind and does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth, with no one able to restrain his hand or question his actions [1]. The Psalms declare that the Lord reigns, is clothed with majesty and power, and establishes the world so that it cannot be moved [7]. God is also the author and preserver of natural life, which is ultimately in his hand [5].
Jesus Christ, as the Son of God, possesses the power of God, described as supreme, unlimited, and extending over all flesh and all things [3, 11, 12]. All authority has been placed in Jesus' hands, enabling him to give eternal life [12]. His power and authority transcend all rival powers in this age and the coming age [11]. The Lord also has authority over life and death [13].
Humanity's role within God's sovereignty is one of delegated authority. God blessed humanity and entrusted them with the care and management of the world as his vice-regents [9]. This stewardship implies that while humans have responsibilities, they operate within the bounds of God's ultimate control.
The Scriptures themselves are a testament to God's sovereignty and serve as a guide for living. They are given by the inspiration of God and the Holy Spirit, making them the true source of all authority in matters of doctrine and practice [2, 14]. The inspiration of Scripture means it is "God-breathed," affirming God's full responsibility for its content, even while involving human authors [10]. The effectiveness of Scripture provides wisdom for living out salvation [10]. Therefore, guided living involves heeding the Word of God, which is called the "word of truth" and the "holy Scriptures" [2]. As one tradition holds, God is the fountain of holiness, and believers are called to be partakers of holiness, striving to be holy as He is [14].
