God's View on Mental Health in Scripture
The Bible addresses mental health through various lenses, often intertwining physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Scripture indicates that God is intimately aware of the human spirit and its inner workings [1, 10, 15].
The Old Testament frequently connects distress and illness, sometimes without clear distinctions between physical and mental suffering. For instance, Psalm 31:9 laments, "Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief" [4]. This verse suggests a holistic decline affecting the entire person. Similarly, Psalm 41:3 speaks of God sustaining an individual on their "sickbed," which can encompass both physical and spiritual illness [3, 11]. The concept of "sickness" in general is presented as something God can send or permit, sometimes as a consequence of sin or intemperance, but also as something He promises and exhibits power and mercy in healing [2, 9].
The wisdom literature, particularly Proverbs, highlights the impact of one's inner state on overall health. Proverbs 17:22 states that "a merry heart does good like a medicine" [12]. Matthew Henry interprets this not as advocating for "vain, carnal, sensual mirth," but rather a "heart rejoicing in God" and finding comfort in outward enjoyments and pleasant conversation [12]. This suggests that a joyful disposition rooted in faith can contribute to well-being.
In the New Testament, Jesus' ministry is presented as one of holistic healing. Luke 4:18 records Jesus proclaiming his mission to "heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed" [5]. Jamieson, Fausset & Brown interpret these "maladies under which humanity groans" as encompassing poverty, broken-heartedness, bondage, blindness, and crushedness, all of which Christ addresses as the "glorious HEALER" [14]. This passage implies that emotional and psychological suffering ("brokenhearted," "crushed") are within the scope of Christ's redemptive work. The spiritual life is also described as originating from God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and maintained through faith, prayer, and God's word [7].
While the Bible acknowledges suffering, it also presents God as one who hears the "cry of distress" [6]. The happiness of believers is described as being found in God, in wisdom, in the fear of God, trust, obedience, and hope [8]. The concept of "spiritual life" is foundational, with God as its author, and it is maintained through various spiritual disciplines [7].
The Bible does not use modern clinical terms for mental health conditions, but it consistently portrays God as concerned with the entirety of human experience, including emotional and psychological states. The "spirit of man" is seen as something God watches over and searches [1, 15]. While some illnesses are attributed to divine judgment or demonic influence in certain contexts [2, 9], the overarching narrative emphasizes God's capacity and desire to heal and restore, both physically and spiritually [2, 13]. John Gill, commenting on Jeremiah 33:6, interprets God's promise to "bring it health and cure" as referring to the healing of "spiritual maladies, the diseases of sin, through the blood of the Messiah," which he equates with the remission of sin [13]. This highlights a theological understanding where spiritual healing is paramount and often intertwined with other forms of well-being.
