Literal Interpretation of the Word of Truth in Scripture
The "word of truth" in Scripture refers primarily to the divine revelation given by God, encompassing the entirety of the Bible and, more specifically, the Gospel message [2, 7, 8]. This concept is rooted in the understanding that God himself is a God of truth [5], and His communication to humanity reflects this essential characteristic.
The Bible is called the "word of God" because its writers were instruments through whom God communicated His will to humanity [3]. It is considered infallible, free from error in fact, doctrine, or precept, because it was written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit [3]. Various passages refer to the Scriptures as the "word" or "word of God" [2]. For instance, James 1:18 speaks of God bringing believers forth "by the word of truth," and 2 Timothy 3:15 refers to the "Holy Scriptures" [2]. The prophet Daniel also uses the phrase "scripture of truth" (Daniel 10:21) [2].
The term "truth" itself carries several meanings in Scripture. It can denote that which is opposed to falsehood, as seen in Proverbs 12:17, 19. It can also signify fidelity or truthfulness, as in Isaiah 59:14-15 and Jeremiah 7:28 [1]. In a theological sense, the doctrine of Christ is called "the truth of the gospel" (Galatians 2:5) and simply "the truth" (2 Timothy 3:7; 4:4) [1]. Jesus himself declared, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6) [1]. The Holy Spirit is also identified as the "Spirit of truth" who guides believers into all truth (John 14:17; 16:13) [5].
When the phrase "word of truth" is used, it often points to the Gospel. John Gill, in his commentary on Ephesians 1:13, notes that the Gospel is frequently called the "word of truth" because it originates from God, who cannot lie, and declares His will concerning salvation [7]. It concerns Christ, who is the truth, and the Spirit of truth leads people into it, making it effective [7]. Similarly, Gill interprets the "faithful word" in Titus 1:9 as the doctrine of the Gospel, which is "the word of truth, and truth itself" [8]. He emphasizes its reliability, purity, and its display of God's faithfulness [8].
The "word of truth" is also understood as the means by which God's power is manifested. In 2 Corinthians 6:7, Paul speaks of serving God "in the word of truth, in the power of God" [4, 6]. John Gill interprets this as preaching the Gospel sincerely, without adulteration, with God's power accompanying it for conversion and salvation [9]. This power can also be seen in the signs, wonders, and miracles that confirmed the Gospel message [9].
The certainty of the "words of truth" is a significant aspect. The doctrines of the Gospel are considered "words of truth" because they are found in the "Scriptures of truth," come from the "God of truth," and their subject is Christ, who is the truth [12]. There is an inherent certainty in these words, as they are part of the inspired and infallible word of God [12].
The concept of God's word as righteousness is also linked to truth. Matthew Henry notes that God's word is righteousness itself, serving as the rule of God's judgment and consonant with His eternal counsels [11]. This "everlasting righteousness" is revealed in the Gospel and is accepted by God for those who believe [10].
