Significance of Noah's Birth in the Lineage of Ham
Noah, the tenth in descent from Adam, became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth [4, 9]. This occurred after Noah reached 500 years of age [8, 9]. Ham's name means "warm" or "hot," and also an Egyptian word for "black" [1, 3]. He is consistently listed among Noah's sons in biblical genealogies, including Genesis 6:10, Genesis 9:18, Genesis 10:1, and 1 Chronicles 1:4 [4, 5, 6, 7].
While Ham is often listed second, some interpretations suggest he was the youngest son [1, 2]. Adam Clarke notes that Shem is frequently mentioned first because the Messiah would descend from his lineage, even though Japheth was likely the eldest [16]. Ham's sons were Cush, Mizraim, Phut, and Canaan [2, 3]. These sons became the progenitors of various peoples, with Cushites settling in southern regions of Asia, Canaanites in Palestine and Syria, and Mizraim (Egypt) being recognized as the "land of Ham" in the Bible [2, 12].
Ham is primarily known for an incident recorded in Genesis 9, where he saw his father Noah's nakedness and reported it to his brothers, Shem and Japheth [2, 15]. This act is described as irreverence [2]. In response, Noah cursed Canaan, Ham's son, rather than Ham directly [1, 13]. John Calvin suggests that the punishment was extended to Ham's posterity to emphasize the severity of the offense [13]. This curse was later seen as fulfilled when the Israelites exterminated the Canaanites [1].
The lineage of Ham is significant for understanding the early post-Flood world. For instance, Nimrod, a grandson of Ham through Cush, founded the earliest monarchy in Babylonia, indicating that the primitive Babylonian empire was Hamitic [1]. Flavius Josephus notes that Noah's sons, including Ham, were born 100 years before the Deluge and were instrumental in repopulating the earth after the flood [10, 14]. The "generations of the sons of Noah" in Genesis 10 provide a catalogue of nations existing in Moses' time, with the Hamitic line preceding that of Shem in this particular arrangement [11].

The primitive Babylonian empire was thus Hamitic, and of a cognate race with the primitive inhabitants of Arabia and of Ethiopia. (See [2”
