The Church's Hope in God's Sovereignty and Providence
The church's hope is rooted in God's sovereignty and providence, a hope that is both a present reality and a future anticipation. This hope is directed toward God (Psalm 39:7; 1 Peter 1:21) and specifically in Christ (1 Corinthians 15:19; 1 Timothy 1:1), resting on God's promises (Acts 26:6-7; Titus 1:2) and His mercy (Psalm 33:18) [1]. It is a hope that is described as good (2 Thessalonians 2:16), lively (1 Peter 1:3), sure and steadfast (Hebrews 6:19), gladdening (Proverbs 10:28), and blessed (Titus 2:13) [1].
This hope is not a mere wish but a confident expectation, produced by faith (Romans 5:1-2; Galatians 5:5) and made full by hope itself (Hebrews 6:11, 19) [1, 4]. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 15:13, prays that "the God of hope make you full of joy and peace through faith, so that all hope may be yours in the power of the Holy Spirit" [2]. This highlights the Holy Spirit's role in inspiring believers with gracious affections and abounding hope in the glory of God [12]. The "full assurance of faith" (Hebrews 10:22) is a complete trust in God that leaves no room for doubt, while the "full assurance of understanding" (Colossians 2:2) is an unwavering conviction in the truth of Scripture [3]. This assurance is an effect of righteousness (Isaiah 32:17) and is abundant in the understanding of the gospel (Colossians 2:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:5) [4].
The church's hope is intrinsically linked to the concept of "waiting upon God." This waiting is directed toward God as the God of providence (Jeremiah 14:22) and salvation (Psalm 25:5), and as the giver of all temporal blessings (Psalm 104:27-28; Psalm 145:15-16) [5]. Believers wait for mercy (Psalm 123:2), pardon (Psalm 39:7-8), salvation (Genesis 49:18; Psalm 62:1-2), guidance (Psalm 25:5), protection (Psalm 33:20; 59:9-10), and the fulfillment of God's word and promises (Habakkuk 2:3; Acts 1:4) [5]. This waiting also includes the hope of righteousness by faith (Galatians 5:5) and the coming of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 1:10) [5]. John Gill emphasizes that the Lord is the only proper object of hope and confidence, and that Christ, being truly God, is the hope of His people [13].
The church, as the body of Christ, is a unified entity composed of many members, each with a distinct function determined by God (1 Corinthians 12:11, 18, 28; Romans 12:4-5) [7]. This unity is not merely organizational but spiritual, as all believers come to Christ and receive God's promises in the same way, transcending differences such as gender or social status (Galatians 3:28; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 2:14; Colossians 3:11) [9]. The church is called to maintain harmony and care for one another within this unified body (1 Corinthians 12:25-26) [10]. Just as Christ is one, so there can be only one body of Christ, and allegiance to Jesus as Lord fosters harmonious relationships within this body (Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 4:4-6; Colossians 3:15) [8]. This collective body, joined together in Christ, becomes a holy temple for the Lord, with God dwelling among His people (Ephesians 2:21; Matthew 18:20; 28:20; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Peter 2:4-5) [11].
Perseverance is an essential aspect of the church's hope, serving as evidence of reconciliation with God (Colossians 1:21-23) and belonging to Christ (John 8:31; Hebrews 3:6, 14) [6]. Saints are characterized by perseverance in seeking God (1 Chronicles 16:11), waiting upon God (Hosea 12:6), prayer (Romans 12:12; Ephesians 6:18), and well-doing (Romans 2:7; 2 Thessalonians 3:13) [6]. This perseverance is maintained through the power of God (Psalm 37:24; Philippians 1:6), the power of Christ (John 10:28), and the intercession of Christ (Luke 22:31-32; John 17:11) [6]. The church's hope is a confident anticipation of Christ's return and the future blessings believers will share as joint heirs with Him of all God's promised blessings (Ephesians 1:18) [14].
