Mystery of God's Sovereign Providence in Scripture
The mystery of God's sovereign providence refers to the unsearchable and often incomprehensible ways in which God preserves and governs all things through secondary causes [1, 6]. This divine oversight extends to the natural world, animal creation, and the affairs of humanity, including the free actions of individuals [1]. While the term "providence" literally means foresight, its theological usage encompasses God's active role in sustaining and directing creation [1].
Scripture presents God's wisdom as perfect, mighty, universal, infinite, and unsearchable, transcending human comprehension [2, 6]. This wisdom is evident in His works and is the source from which all human wisdom is derived [2]. The Bible does not offer a theoretical explanation for the mystery of prayer's efficacy, which can seem difficult to reconcile with beliefs about unalterable general laws or human free will [4]. Similarly, the doctrine of predestination, which posits that God's eternal, sovereign, immutable, and unconditional decree governs all events, is acknowledged as beset with difficulties and belonging to the "secret things" of God [3].
The "secret of the Lord" is said to be with those who fear Him, encompassing His purposes, such as election, redemption, and calling, as well as the secrets of His providences [7]. These are the "deep things of God" that the Spirit reveals [7]. Matthew Henry notes that there is a twofold wisdom: one hidden in God, which is secret and not for humanity to know, and another made known and revealed to humanity [9]. The designs and methods of divine Providence concerning the church and the world are described as fixed and determined, "written in a book" held by God [10].
Paul, in Romans 11:33, expresses awe at the depth of God's wisdom and knowledge, acknowledging His judgments as unsearchable and His ways unfathomable, particularly in His dealings with Jews and Gentiles [6, 8]. This "mystery of his will" often refers to divine truths previously hidden but now revealed through the Gospel, such as the inclusion of Gentiles and Jews in God's redeemed people and the ultimate authority of Christ over all things [11, 12, 13]. Proverbs 25:2 states that "The glory of God is to conceal a thing, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter" [5].
