Mystery of God's Sovereign Will in Theology
The concept of God's sovereign will often involves elements that are described as mysterious, particularly concerning how divine omnipotence and human agency interact [2, 4]. The Bible itself poses the question, "Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty?" (Job 11:7). This suggests that certain aspects of God's nature and operations are beyond full human comprehension [1].
In theological discourse, a "mystery" generally refers to a truth that was once hidden but has now been revealed, or a truth that, while revealed, cannot be fully understood by finite human intelligence [3]. For instance, the calling of the Gentiles into the Christian Church is described as a mystery in Ephesians 1:9-10, 3:8-11, and Colossians 1:25-27, a truth previously undiscoverable except through revelation [3]. Similarly, the resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians 15:51) and the union between Christ and his people (Ephesians 5:31-32) are also termed mysteries [3].
The "mystery of God's will" is frequently identified with the Gospel itself [7, 12]. The Gospel contains doctrines that are considered mysterious, such as the Trinity, the incarnation of Christ, the union of divine and human natures in his person, and the spiritual union of believers with Christ [7, 12, 13]. These are truths that, even when revealed, retain an element of incomprehensibility regarding their modus or manner of being [13]. The apostle Paul speaks of "the wisdom of God... in a mystery" (1 Corinthians 2:6), indicating that the divine wisdom displayed in the Gospel is profound and not easily grasped by human reason [11].
God's wisdom is described as perfect, mighty, universal, infinite, unsearchable, and beyond human comprehension [1]. Romans 11:33, for example, exclaims, "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!" [1]. This unsearchable wisdom is closely linked to God's sovereign will. The "mystery of his will" refers to God's plan to bring all things together under the authority of Christ, a truth revealed through the Gospel [8]. This includes the inclusion of both Gentiles and Jews in God's redeemed people [8].
The doctrine of predestination, which concerns God's eternal purpose of salvation, is also considered part of the "secret things" of God [4]. While Scripture teaches that God's "determinate purpose" governs all events (Acts 4:28; Romans 8:29-30; Ephesians 1:5, 11), the full understanding of this doctrine is acknowledged to be difficult and belongs to the mysteries of God [4]. The love of God is described as sovereign, great, abiding, unfailing, and unalienable, often manifested irrespective of human merit [5]. This sovereign love is part of God's character and is exhibited in the Gospel [5].
The "secret of the Lord" is said to be with those who fear Him (Psalm 25:14), referring to His purposes concerning election, redemption, calling, and predestination [9]. These "deep things of God" are revealed by the Spirit of God to believers [9]. The Gospel, as "the mystery which hath been hid from ages and generations" (Colossians 1:26), contains truths that, though revealed, remain mysterious to the natural mind [10]. Even for enlightened individuals, the full scope of these truths may not be entirely clear [10]. The "mystery of godliness" (1 Timothy 3:16) encompasses the incarnation of Christ and the union of his divine and human natures, which, while revealed, cannot be fully accounted for by human reason [6, 13].
