Understanding God's Goodness in Difficult Circumstances
God's goodness is a fundamental aspect of His character, encompassing benevolence, mercy, pity, compassion, and grace [3]. This goodness is not merely an abstract concept but is actively demonstrated in His interactions with creation and humanity [3, 9]. The psalmist proclaims, "I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness, for you have seen my affliction. You have known my soul in adversities" [5]. This "loving-kindness" (Hebrew: hesed) is described in scripture as great, excellent, good, marvelous, multitudinous, everlasting, and merciful [1].
Even in difficult circumstances, the Bible affirms God's goodness and His providential care [7]. The concept of divine providence refers to God's preserving and governing all things through secondary causes, extending to the natural world, animals, the affairs of nations, and the lives of individuals [7, 9]. This includes His special preservation, prosperity, protection, and deliverance of His saints [9]. For instance, God is depicted as being with the afflicted, comforting them, and delivering them [6].
The goodness of God is particularly evident in His loving-kindness, which is considered "better than life" (Psalm 63:3) [1]. This loving-kindness is a reason for prayer and expectation of divine intervention, even when facing affliction [1, 8]. John Gill, in his commentary on Psalm 107:7, encourages praise for God's providential goodness, such as providing food and drink, guiding lost paths, and ensuring safe journeys. He also highlights God's special grace and goodness in redemption and calling [11]. Similarly, Gill notes that God's loving-kindness to Christ, as Mediator, is "good" and a basis for Christ's expectation of being heard [12].
However, understanding God's goodness in suffering can be challenging. The Apostle Paul speaks of both "the goodness and severity of God" (Romans 11:22), indicating that God's character includes both aspects [4]. The book of Ecclesiastes explores the difficulty of fully comprehending God's work and the reasons behind His providences [10, 13]. Despite this, the enduring of sorrows while suffering unjustly, out of consciousness of God, "finds favor" [2]. John Chrysostom acknowledged the difficulty in understanding the extent of God's love, especially when confronted with the presence of evil in the world [14]. Yet, the biblical witness consistently points to God's unwavering goodness, even when human understanding falters [1, 3].
