Understanding God's Sovereignty and Goodness in Theology
God's sovereignty refers to His absolute right to act according to His own will and good pleasure [2]. The goodness of God is a perfection of His character that He extends to His creatures in various circumstances [1]. It is described as great, rich, abundant, satisfying, enduring, and universal [5]. This goodness manifests as benevolence generally, mercy and compassion towards those in misery, long-suffering patience towards impenitent sinners, and grace in bestowing favor upon the unworthy [1]. The psalmist emphasizes God's goodness as a proper subject for cheerful praise [10]. John Gill interprets God's goodness as His glory, particularly as it appears in His works, providence, and sovereign grace, especially in pardoning grace through Christ [12].
God's wisdom is another essential attribute, described as perfect, mighty, universal, infinite, unsearchable, and beyond human comprehension [4]. The apostle Paul exclaims, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" (Romans 11:33, Tyndale) [7]. These attributes—sovereignty, goodness, wisdom, and righteousness—are not separate entities but different aspects of one unchangeable, infinitely wise, and sovereign moral perfection [1]. God is not sometimes good and sometimes just; rather, His goodness and justice are intrinsically linked [1]. The works of the righteous and the wise are "in the hand of God" (Ecclesiastes 9:1), indicating His overarching control and care [8].
