Understanding God's Transcendence in Scripture and Theology
God's transcendence refers to His nature as utterly distinct from and superior to His creation, possessing attributes that are beyond full human comprehension [9]. This concept is deeply rooted in Scripture, which consistently portrays God as infinite, unsearchable, and incomparable [2].
The Bible emphasizes that God's wisdom and knowledge are boundless. For instance, Psalm 147:5 declares His understanding to be infinite, and Romans 11:33 exclaims, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" [2, 3]. This unsearchable quality extends to His foreknowledge, which is an attribute "the full import of which we cannot comprehend" [1]. Job 11:7 directly challenges human capacity to grasp God's nature, asking, "Can you fathom the deep things of God or discover the limits of the Almighty?" [4]. Matthew Henry notes that God is an "incomprehensible Being, infinite and immense, whose nature and perfections our finite understandings cannot possibly form any adequate conceptions of" [9].
This transcendence means that while humanity can know about God through creation and revelation, a complete, exhaustive understanding remains elusive [11]. The apostle Paul speaks of knowing "the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge" (Ephesians 3:19), a paradox that suggests human knowledge can apprehend aspects of divine love even while acknowledging its ultimate incomprehensibility [5, 6]. John Gill, commenting on Psalm 139:5, reflects on the "knowledge of himself, such as God had of him, which was vastly superior to what he had of himself," indicating that even self-knowledge is limited compared to God's perfect understanding [7].
Despite God's transcendence, Scripture also presents a God who desires relationship with humanity. The Hebrew word for "know" (Hebrew: yada) often implies an intimate, experiential relationship rather than mere intellectual assent [10, 11]. To "know God as Yahweh" is to be in a relationship where one is "always learning who he is and what he wants us to do" [10]. This relational knowledge, however, does not negate His transcendent nature; rather, it highlights that even in relationship, God remains infinitely greater than His creation [8].
