Using Extrabiblical Examples Faithfully in Christian Theology
Christian theology often draws upon examples from outside the biblical text to illustrate or reinforce theological concepts, provided these examples align with biblical teaching. However, the primary and most authoritative source for examples of Christian virtues and actions remains the life and character of Jesus Christ himself.

Ministers, in particular, are called to be examples of sincerity (Titus 2:7) [1] and to exercise self-denial (2 Corinthians 6:4-5) [2]. The "work of faith" is described as a "working reality" that is not merely an "otiose assent" but manifests in continuous action, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 1:3 [7]. This faith is developed through perseverance and faithfulness, as exemplified by the Ephesian Christians who examined claims, disciplined evil, and suffered patiently for their faith [8].
The faithful use of extrabiblical examples in Christian theology requires careful discernment to ensure they genuinely reflect and do not contradict biblical principles. While the Bible provides the core examples, particularly in the person of Christ, other historical or contemporary figures can serve as illustrative aids when their lives demonstrably embody these same virtues. The emphasis remains on the biblical standard, with external examples serving as secondary, supportive illustrations.
