Using Extrabiblical Illustrations in Biblical Teaching and Preaching
Biblical teaching and preaching often employ extrabiblical illustrations to clarify and apply scriptural truths. An illustration, or parable, is fundamentally a comparison or similitude used to explain one subject by reference to another [2]. This practice is rooted in biblical precedent, as Jesus himself frequently used parables with "surprising, evocative imagery" to emphasize the growth of the Kingdom of God or the contrast between humble beginnings and glorious consummation [8].
The New Testament uses the Greek word parabole to describe these comparisons, which can range from short proverbs to dark prophetic utterances or enigmatic maxims [2]. The purpose of such illustrations is to make complex ideas more accessible and relatable to the audience. For instance, the concept of sin, which is described in scripture as everything from idolatry [1] to rebellion [5] and a corrupt nature [6], can be illuminated through various examples. Augustine, for example, explained that while humans are "born of God," they become "children of the devil by imitating him, not by proper birth," using an analogy to distinguish spiritual lineage from physical generation [4].
Preachers and teachers throughout history have followed this pattern, drawing on common experiences and observations to explain biblical doctrines. The use of examples is not limited to parables; the Bible itself provides numerous examples for instruction, such as Christ's life as an example for believers (1 Pet. 2:21; John 13:15) and the prophets as examples of enduring affliction (James 5:10) [3]. These examples serve to make abstract theological concepts concrete and understandable.
The effectiveness of extrabiblical illustrations lies in their ability to connect divine truth with human experience, making the message more memorable and impactful. This aligns with the broader understanding that faith should not remain a private, internal matter but should motivate believers to share their knowledge and draw others to God [7].
